I have a lone Zebra Danio that I got a few months ago (the others died). He is too aggressive for my community tank and I have had to move him to a one gallon tank (all that I have availible and I don't have room for another fully set up tank so don't say get a bigger one). I know this is cruel to keep him alone - I know, groups of three or more - but am afraid to return him to the scary pet shop that I bought him at. It's a fish concentration camp, but the next closest fishstore is more than 40 minutes away. I don't have friends or relatives that will take him. I was thinking my best bet is a little 1.5 gallon tank I own - if I can figure out how to filter it. If I get him two friends will he be ok in there? Also, I don't want other Zebra Danios - but I would do it if I have to for Chaos. Can I get other fish that will school with him? I heard something about Pearl Danios...

When you had the other danios in the community tank, was Chaos still a bully towards the other fish? As you know, they should be kept in small groups - if not, they tend to bully, chase, and nip other fish.

Honestly, I wouldn't put any fish in anything less than a 2.5-gallon tank that is filtered (and I keep my danios in heated water, too). I know you don't want to take him back to the pet store (Lord knows they usually treat the fish like crap), but you really can't put him in with anything else in a tank that small and unfiltered.

Zebras tend to stick to their own kind more often than not, but I have heard reports of them schooling with leopards and pearls. Just stay away from the long-finned and the giant danios. If you do get a bigger and filtered tank, look into Glo-Fish - they will school with regular zebras, as they are genetically altered zebras. They're bright, colorful, and just as spazzy as regular zebras.

Usually only zebra danios school together. You might try some Glofish (colored zebra danios) but it depends on the fish I guess. I don't think you should have any more than the 5 zebras in your tank because they are really active and need that much room. If you want other fun tank mates, try some invertebrate cleaners like shrimp and snails, but no more fish please! :) However, If you had at least a 25 gallon I would suggest: 5 zebras 4 glofish 4 cory catfish a few ghost shrimp With bigger than that you could add some also active tetras. Good luck! :)

Zebra Danios do best in scools of several of their own kind. They are fast-moving fish, and a 1.5 gallon tank is much too small for even one.If you could, get at least a ten-gallon tank, and put 3 or 4 more danios in with it(they need to be zebras).Or put an ad in the paper or at the fish store to find him a new home and a bigger tank.

you can get zebra, pearl, spotted and albino danios all of which school together. if you buy some of these (3or 4 should do) then you should be able to put them all in your main tank and your zebra danio should calm down and be a peaceful fish!!
iv never actually seen an aggressive danio though!! i always keep mine in a group of around 5 in my community aquarium and they always do fine!
hope this helps you out!!!

We had a Zebra who lived for several years when I was a kid. It would occasionally nip at the other fish, but generally was okay in the tank with them. Maybe it's just a particularly agressive personality (if fish really have personalities). It's hard to say.
