Gibbs dropped the catch in over enthusiasm in a Super Six clash of WC 1999 b/w South Africa & Australia. Waugh went on to score century, won the match, and got his team to Semi Final agaisnt agains South Africa which was ended in a tie and on run rate basis australia were through to the Final.

South Africa was in splended shape to win that WC but that dropped catch took them to Face Aussies in the Semis which caused their exit from WC.

I think that was the costliest catch i have ever seen in ODI cricket

The costliest dropped catch ever in Cricket is according to me was the sitter off Australia's Steve Waugh dropped by
Herschelle Herman Gibbs of South Africa in the 2nd semi final of ICC World Cup 1999 played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 17.06.1999. Both the teams scored 213 runs and hence the match was tied.

By virtue of their topping the Super 6 table, Australia entered the final.

By dropped the above Catch, Gibbs dropped the World Cup
for South Africa as remarked by Steve Waugh

Gibbs dropped catch of world cup 1999 against Australia.

South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs dropped the ball as he prematurely celebrated the ‘catch’.

Waugh, 56 not out at the time, went on to make a match-winning 120 not out, with his side eventually taking the tournament.

It depends how you measure it.
I remember when Gooch scored his 333 against India he was dropped when his score was only in the '00s.
I played in a game once when a player was dropped first ball and went on to make 183.
On the whole though, the drop by the South African in the semi final of the world cup at Headingly (already nominated a couple of time) seems one of the most expensive. South Africa were cruising to victory in that game and that catch would definately have sealed it.
