Fiction and the facts:
A snake will chase you- no, they will stand their ground, sometimes, but mostly, they retreat
A whipsnake will whip you with its tail-no, they do not do this. They are so named because of the length of the tail
A snake fang stuck in a tire will kill you if you touch it- no, the fangs do not contain venom, they are used to inject it.
If a snake bites the handle of a shovel or hoe, it will travel up the handle and kill you-no, the venom stays where the bite is and will not defy gravity
If bitten by a venomous snake, drink alot of alcohol (booze)- no, doing so is no cure and only hampers medical aid.
If you cut its head off, the snake will not die until sunset-maybe. snakes have a slow matabolism and this is why it takes some time for the heart to stop. If done at proper timing, this may work. Besides, without it head, how can the snake know when sunset is?
Horsehair rope can be used to ward off snakes- no, they will cross horsehair rope
Burning old shoes in a circle around your property will stop a snake from entering your property-no, this only gets rid of all those old shoes. Snakes are not affected by the ash of rubber and cloth.
Some snakes can eat people- yes, reticulated pythons, anacondas have been documented to do this, but the occurrance is very rare
Dust from a rattlesnake's rattle will blind you- no, unless he has been in a dusty area, there is no dust on the rattle
Snakes can know if you are scared of them- no, they have no concept of emotion
Poisionous snakes- no, there are no poisionous snakes. poision is something lethal that is ingested (taken by mouth). Venom is injected through the skin by the fangs.
Any snake can be eaten and you will not die.
Two headed snakes-yes, it is a freak of nature and extremely rare, but it does occur
Copperhead rattlesnakes-no, they are two completely different species incapable of interbreeding
Someone seen a snake so long, it was laid across the road and had its head in one ditch the tail in the other ditch-no, not in North America. The roads are about 10 feet across each lane, average. Ditches on the side of the road are usually about 8 feet from the roads' edge. That means the snake had to be at least 36 feet long, and that is just from the ditches' edge to edge, most ditches are 3 feet deep, so add another 6 feet= 42 feet long.
Only two snakes can even reach that and they have never been found that long, reticulated python and the green anaconda, neither are native to North America, but they are available through the pet trade
Ok, those given, I will explain why to not kill a snake.
they provide free rodent control and have their place in the balance of nature. snakes are quiet creatures that sometimes end up in the presence of humans. They did not do this as a means of hunting us, it was an accident.
Many species of snakes are becoming more and more rare, some even near extinction.
It is also worth mentioning that most snakebite victims were bitten while handling or harrassing the snake. Few cases were "ligitimate" bites, that is unaware the of the presence of the snake.
Also, in nearly all cases of bites where the person was bitten, alcohol consumtion was involved, as was harrassment of the snake
Most bites are to males, most bites ("ligitimate") were to farmhands, and the state with the most "ligimate" bites is North Carolina, the snake involved in those bites, copperhead
Snakes are losing their habitats each day why end their lives, too?
Some people say that the only good snake is a dead snake. This is ignorance, kind of like saying the only good ignorant person is a dead one. Close minded people have no business speaking opinions, but anyway....
Do yourself, the world, and especially the snakes, a favor. Study them. See their purpose and beauty. Learn preservation and conservation, preach it, and live it.
Somewhere, there is a nature balance between man and nature. And it does not include killing for the sake of killing. Let the snake live and it will go its way, most likely never to be seen again.

after reading the answers you have already, I felt the need to share some facts with you. racers have been known to chase a person. The same goes for the black mamba. if you pick up a rattlesnake head shortly after it's been decapitated, it still can bite you as well as the stump of the snake can track your movement and strike at you. this has happen many times in front of me. You can chop the head of a rattlesnake off, put the body in the freezer and three months later, pull the snake out, thaw it out and the heart will start to beat again. sunsets has nothing to do with snakes dying and snakes don't bite their tails and roll down hills a dead rattlesnake that has been dead for a short time and dried up can still envenomed you if you stab yourself by a fang, chances are the last thing the snake did was bite and that could have left residue of venom on the fang. last, don't ever cut and suck out the venom out of the person that just got bit for two reasons. 1. if you have the slightest cavity, ulcer or cut in your mouth, you are a victim as well 2. since a snakes fangs are curved back wards, most people cut well above the venom pocket and causing more trauma to the limb than the poison.

Don't know if this is superstitious or not, heard it from several sources. If you have a non-venomous snake in your yard, you don't want to kill it because snakes are territorial and they'll keep out the venomous ones. That may have been geared towards the black racer type snakes. Also, I know for a fact you don't want to kill them because they'll help keep the rodent population down.
