40% of people LIE in their resumes, in hopes of being hired.
My guess is, that the other most common lies are fake compliments and fake concern, stemming from an overall lack of compassion and honesty.

An "untruth" isn't an "untruth" if you don't know that it's false.
And, to be a lie, you have to knowingly and willingly try to fool someone. If you have to say something false to save your own life, or the life of someone else, then it is not considered a "lie."
I'd say that the most likely are the social white lies, usually told to get along in society. For instance, if an aquaintance asks if they look good in their new hairdo, you say "Yeah you look great" even if they don't, right? And, if a stranger asks the polite, "How you doing" you always say "okay", right? No one likes a totally ("brutally") honest person -- we have all sorts of names for that person, don't we?

1. When they think they can't get caught and
2. When they think it won't hurt anyone else or in fact it will make someone feel better.
The likeliness is obvious. "Does this make me look fat?" and "I can't come tonight, I'm not feeling well" are the most prevalent ones that I can think of.
Seriously, can you imagine a world where no one lied? How nice that would be...

1. When caught cheating (on a significant other or in an academic/game/etc setting). Because their integrity is brought down to the level of "scum of the earth."
2. When they have murdered someone or done something illegal. (Because they don't want to go to jail.)
