I'm thinkin' a chunky scarf made out of big yarn, nice and soft, really long, y'know, a scarf that I can sink into. Winter's coming, if it isn't already here. From personal experience or just speculation, do you think it'd be easier on the wallet if I knitted my own chunky scarves, or would I save more money buying them from stores like Old Navy, Target, H&M and Forever 21? Thanks in advance. :]

Not when you look at it as "Time is money". After the supply cost and then the time to make it you would have been better off buying one.

With that said, I think you should go for it and make your own chunky comfy scarf! It will be so much more enjoyable knowing you made something to keep you warm :)

There is something to be said about making things for yourself. It might not be a whole lot cheaper especially if you count your time, but the reward will definitely be there. It is enjoyable to sit and relax and to knit or crochet when you have a free moment. It is equally gratifying to watch the progress and complete the project. Trust me. . .I knitted a scarf last winter and had not picked up knitting needles in over 30 years. Words cannot describe how proud I was when it was finished. I loved wearing it as it had some significance to me. . .I MADE IT!!!

Nothing compares to creating something with your own 2 hands. I don't knit I crochet. The best part is finding the perfect yarn for what I want to make. In the stores you are left to what they have picked out for you.

I find anything to do with Crafts and Hobbies has gotten costly. My sister knits and the wools and and the supplies add up quickly. It is a great hobby though.

Head up if you buy it you'll waste more money

If you make it, you'll save money, get good hand and eye coordination, and doing something like knitting is good keeping your mind off something you don't wanna think about.

How good a knitter are you? How much is your time worth? Do you knit as a hobby?

For most, it would be cheaper to buy.
