He changed to 24. It was one of the numbers he wore in high school (the other being 33, which was his dads number when he played pro ball, but Kobe couldn't have that number with the Lakers because it belonged to Kareem and was retired). He wanted to make the change to signify the start of the second half of his career.
And it has nothing to do with Michael Jordan, people who keep saying that need to lose that delusion.

Kobe didn't play any pre-season games because of his knee injury. He changed his number to 24 so he could get a new fresh start with a new fresh team. Some think that he only did it for the money, but thats not true.

He's 24 because it's his high school number. He wanted it to be like his second-half of his career. And I like to point out about Kobe using the number 24 being more good than Jordan than 1. It has nothing to do with it. LeBron is 23 and no one makes a buzz about it.

Kobe switched his number to 24 for a reason he really has not specified clear enough! I saw an interview on ESPN and he pretty much did not give a good answer

like everybody else have answered, #24. the original idea of putting on #8 was because his favorite player in when he was little was Mike Antoine or something like that. He was playing Mike's team, the Phoenix Suns, on the first round of playoff last season and thought that it would be a time for a change (maybe he just doesn't like Mike anymore because the Suns defeated the Lakers)

He changed it so all of the suckers who spent their life savings buying a #8 jersey now have to buy a #24 jersey.

his new number is 24 because "its his high school number". i don't think he wanted to change it. i think it had some thing to do with nike or one if his sponsers. a player that great wouldn't change their number, i mean when you think of 8 don't you think of kobe and vice-versa.
