We did this for a relative and it was a neat thing he could use.
What we did was purchase a cheap wall clock. Then we scoured the internet for a favorite graphic of his, resized it to fit the face of the clock and then put that graphic as the clock face.
He loved the birthday gift and it was small enough for him to put in his suitcase to travel home.

Some home made chocolate chip cookies would be good. Sure beats store bought ones. You can also buy some scented candles and wrap them in nice colored papers. When you're on budget, you can't spend too much money on the gift. So pay extra attention to gift wraps and presentation.

How about an I.O.U?
you could make cards with promises to do something special.
during the coming year.
such as wash grandpa's car when his lumbago acts up.
Mow the lawn for Dad before he comes home from work.
take your mother to a movie or dinner. just make a special evening for the two of you.
or a night out with just you and your kid/kids.
special things that you normally dont do but would be helpful when you do.
I knit afgans and blankets throughout the year so i always have something made to give away.
If you sew, make special christmas stockings.

homemade vinegars in interesting bottles (crate and barrel, cost plus, pier one) with herbs like oregano or rosemary or sage or chili peppers or a combo of herbs. It's ok to use fresh or dried White vingegar allows the herbs to stand out.
Another thing I've done is sugared nuts. Walnuts or pecans work well. You lightly brown the nuts in butter and then toss with sugar until the sugar melts, spread out on wax paper to cool and put in fun tins (I got some at Party City) or cool glass containers (Ikea has good ones).
Anyway, have fun.

A friend of mine once made me a rain shaker. I think that's what it's called. You turn it upside down and it sounds like it's raining. She used various pictures of us and other important pictures of my family as well as personal quotes and made a collage to decorate the outside of it. It was very thoughtful and sincere.

Last year I found an old picture of my parents on their honeymoon. I bought a very nice frame and gave it to them. Mom cried.

You could always give them bath salts. Just take epsom salt and add some scent to it...put it in a cute jar and your good to go!
I saw this in a Klutz book-you could always look it up online too.
