The French takeover of Haiti was motivated by political rivalry with Spain, and opportunism.

After Spain discovered the New World it was rapid in establishing colonies and trading posts. After a while a huge arc from Miami to Venezuela was occupied.

The exceptions were usually particularly inhospitable or pirate infested. The island of Tortuga was populated by pirates, and France was able to occupy the Western half of Hispaniola nearby and both sides benefited from mutual protection.

France was weak in power so was happy to tolerate pirates and natives. This enabled it to gain control of areas Spain could not. As Spain declined the individual colonies of Cap de Francais in the north, and Petit Goave and Legune both sheltered by Isle Gonaves expanded, joining together in a contigious nation called Haiti.

The French settled the island of Sainte Domingue in order to raise sugar cane. They did this by importing enslaved Africans. After the only successful large scale slave insurrection in history, the enslaved people of the island formed a new nation Haiti. Haiti, however, did not include the whole of the island.

They took over because they needed more lands to gain wealth from farming, mining, etc. Also, they needed more people to work for them and that means African slaves. That's why there are Africans living there as well as African-European descents known as mulattoes (please excuse me because I think this is a racist remark but since I'm not a racist, I just let you know what they called them during that time).
