A couple of days ago when I turned on my laptop, it made the usual sounds of startup, but the screen remained black. Thinking it was a setting that I did, I restarted it with no avail. Then today, I called Dell, and they told me to hook my laptop up to an external monitor, which I did, and it turned out the other monitor would show my desktop whereas my laptop would still be black. They told me immediately that I had a bad LCD monitor and need to get it fixed for around $400-500. Which is almost half of what I paid for it. Then i took my laptop to my computer teacher, and then a fellow student of mine made some settings, uninstalled some other monitors that I had on it (made presentations with another monitor & projector a while back) then updated my drivers. Then for some reason, my laptop scrn came back on. Thinking my troubles were over, I turned my laptop tonight, but it came on with the blackscreen. After a few mins the normal scrn came back on again. What should I do? b concerned?

Actually sounds like the inverter. The screen is only getting power some times and not others. It could be as simple as a loose connection the the inverter needs to be reseated or it could need to be replaced. An inverter is typically less than $100. Shop time shouldn't be more than 2 hours. Replacing the whole screen is more costly though. New laptop LCDs (without the inverter) sell between $200 and $400.

I also own a Dell laptop. Your problem sounds like one where the laptop would have to be taken apart. Or the little button that senses when the laptop is being closed is stuck. ?? I don't know.
My cooling fan burned out, and the replacement fan is $20, but Dell told me I had to send it in for $150, JUST for them to LOOK at it! Ridiculous!
If you know someone with a lot of skills, I'd let them look at it again. Otherwise, Dell would have to....which is what they want.

From what i can remember off hand, there a function key up top...the FN in blue and one has a setting to toggle between the monitor and laptop display. Maybe you need to see if its still looking for the external monitor.

It sounds like your OS/Hard Drive isn't booting. Seeing how you just sent it in for repairs I'm assuming it's still under warranty. My suggestion it to call Dell or do Live Chat on another computer and try to get them to diagnose the problem. You could also take it to your local repair shop and have them check it out.

The screen or inverter is going bad or loose - Take it by some small local computer shops. They might have old LCD layin around. Dell overcharges their parts to and EXTREME.

Every computer manufacturer charges out of sight to fix their computers. They want you to buy a new one. And you should if you can't find a cheap old one. Try ebay.
