DSL is a method of internet access using traditional phone lines in a new way.
RoadRunner internet access is a cable internet service and uses Cable lines, not telephone lines.
TO SPEEDY:
You are SO wrong about speeds. Traditional DSL using traditional cables has a maximum speed of about 7.1 Mbit, if I remember correctly - it MIGHT be 9.1. The fastest DSL service I've ever seen offered - if you were close enough to a CO, is 6 Mbit. My Cable internet access is 30 Mbit - 5x faster (and yes, I've performed tests to confirm these speeds). I pay $60/month for 30Mbit speeds; DSL 6Mbit would cost me DOUBLE that.
Now there are new technologies coming, including Verizon FiOS, but that is NOT DSL - it's a fiber-optic based system that does not use traditional phone lines.
Lastly, EVERYTHING is shared... Your DSL line is not dedicated to the internet and you only... back at the CO, you're in a switch with everyone else in your neighborhood.

DSL stands for digital service line. It can run through your exsisting telephone line, which is RJ-14. DSL and RoadRunner DSL are the same. RoadRunner cable modem and RoadRunner DSL are uniquely different. DSL transmits information over an RJ-14 line(standard telephone line) whereas a cable modem uses a RJ-45 line (slightly larger than a tele line). It usually is connected to a cable modem that has an input coaxial cable line much like your cable TV. The big controversy is which one is faster. In theory DSL is much more faster. Here is my explanation. DSL transmits packets of information in small data form. Whereas cable modem like a T1 or T3 transmits data in larger packets. Only problem with that you are bound to your network traffic. For instance if you live in a highly populated area like a city of some sort... and everyone has cable broadband service... and using their internet all at once your bandwith speed will be slower than that of DSL. So I hope you like this answer.

Obviously, sounds like you are not that techy for technological terms.
Well, DSL is a kind of internet connection which is faster than a regular dial up (I dont know if you have dial up). Roadrunner is an Internet Service Provider which might offer DSL. So they are a company that provides internet..
hope this gives a little idea.

I have verizon dsl and prefer it, my acquaintances stay on the city and performance RR and that i see little or no distinction in speed compared to them. My dsl has all the speed i want for streaming videos and video clips and likely, your voip and instantaneous would artwork in basic terms besides with the dsl.
