Usually, there must be two traffic violations for one reckless ticket - like speeding and running a red light. But don't tell that to the cop or judge, you will just piss them off. Go to court early and find the cop who wrote the ticket, be nice, tell him how sorry you are that you were driving that fast, if you have a good story (like you were rushing to the hospital, or just got fired...) tell him, then ask if he could help you out with the points. Don't forget to BE NICE. It is better to approach the cop first because the judge usually acts on the cop's recommendation. Good luck.

Shilo is incorrect. Since this is a misdemeanor and you won't be facing any jail time, the court is not required to appoint you an attorney. All your GPA information and being active at your school is irrelevant. You can either contact a traffic lawyer and have them plea it down to a non-moving violation, which will cost a significant amount of money, or you can ask for leniency to the judge to see if you can plead it down or get a reduced fine. You also may be able to go to traffic school which will allow you to have no points on your license. Being your first violation they will be more willing to work with you. Make sure to be polite, admit your guilt if you know you did it and make sure you show up to court when you are supposed to unless you hire an attorney to go on your behalf. ETA: You may be able to request a public defender if you wish, but you are not guaranteed one because it is not a felony, which is the only time you are guaranteed a public defender. You can go to court and hope for a chance to plead down to a lesser crime, or you can contact a lawyer and see if they can plea bargain. That is your best bet.

Say Honestly, I had no idea that I was going that fast. Or just pray that the officer doesn't show up. I believe if he doesn't show up, you get off the hook. That's what happened to me. Although I had my father, who is a mechanic, write a note explaining that my car had different sized tires on it, so that screwed the speedometer up, so it really did say I was doing the speed limit.

seriously?
plead guilty, but ask the judge if it's possible for a lesser fine and/or traffic school. Also, ask if you can make payments instead of one lump sum.
86 in a 60 zone is something I do EVERY DAY on the frwy. Sorry you got busted.

I just can't believe you're even going to court for that. Why???
It's just a traffic violation, you were caught! There IS no defense!
Just say, "Sorry, here's my money!" And get on with your life!

You should have used the services of a attorney maybe its possible to call the court and find out if they will give you a postponement so that you could retain legal council.
