Ignore that first answer.
The person you are asking about is sometimes called Timur or Tamerlane (there is a complete biography of him in Wikipedia under "Timur."). He was a Mongol/Turkic warlord, a Sufi Muslim descendant of Genghis Khan born in the early 1300's A.D. in what is now Uzbekistan. He brutally conquered much of Central Asia from the Persian Gulf to India. When he seized Baghdad in 1401 he ordered all of its people to be massacred. He established what became the Mughal empire and his descendants, including Babur and Shah Jehan went on to rule India and expand the empire.
