Whatever you do, do not tell your child to ignore the bullies. Nor should your child stand up to them. Either way it fuels the fire. What I had to do was look up the bullying policy from teh school, had a meeting with principal, teachers, the bullies and their parents and talked about the policy. We also went to the police and put in a complaint. Then, I took it to the media (newspapers) and put the story in there for everyone to be able to read (now the whole town knows who the bullies are). So far it's now been 6 months and the bullying has all but stopped, with a few exceptions, but nothing like it was at first.

Enroll in a martial arts class (just to be safe)
Find alternate routes at school, on the way home, etc.
Always be around a friend when the bully is near (keep companions)
Tell an authority figure at school (maybe a teacher will give the bully something to keep him/her inside and away from other kids)
Ultimately, tell the 12 year old that bullies will eventually get what's coming to them. Show the 12 year old the movie "Back to the Future" to see that the bully ends up washing cars for the successful "geek". =)

Well my parents never helped me, just don't interfere it will make your 12-year old get picked on more. If you have to say something, tell him to play along with it. That worked for me. When my bully knew I didn't care what he had to say and that I would always say the same thing to him, he just got bored and left me alone.

What exactly are they doing?
It is hard to say without a few details.
When I was bullied in the 7th grade I had a girl that would kick me throughout class. She did this until I turned around and kicked her back. Had no other problems.

sadly there isnt much you can say.. a child who is at teh bottom of the pecking order and is getting bullied isnt in a position to stand up for themselves.. real life isnt like the movies.. you cannot "just" turn it around...
keep doing things to build her self esteme.. tell her to stand up to them although I doubt she will... tell her NOT to let them see her get upset - because this is ultimately what fuels them (a reaction of hurt) this gives them the power they are searching for... you need to understand that kids who bullied are often bullied themselves at home by parents or older siblings...
I was bullied... now I am a much wiser adult.. but I know I was powerless to change my past

Tell them to ignore them. If the prblem pregresses to something serious then get involved. If it's not too serious just ignore them. The Bully is probably big and dumb and just likes to pick on other people to gain power, an when he is older will drop down the list of people and will soon be obsolete.

Tell him to treat others with respect. If others pick on him, tell him to bring it up with a school staff member and keep bringing it up until it stops.
