Atoms in group one have one VALENCE electron. That is, there's one electron that doesn't fit into the orbital pattern assumed for electron placement around the nucleus. The group 7 elements have their orbitals almost full except for one electron. Atoms want to be stable. If the group one atoms give up the extra electron, it make the electron configuration more stable. The same with group 7. If group 7 atoms accept one electron, the outer orbital is full and the atom is stable. Think about table salt, sodium chloride, NaCl. The sodium, a group one element gives the "extra" electron to Chlorine. It's quantum mechanics if you want to look up more detail!

Group 1 is Na etc. and Group 17 is Cl etc. yes? (No periodic table in front of me). Think of atoms as having shells of electrons. The first shell has two, the second and third have eight each. Atoms want full shells, so they'll give up or gain electrons to get to a full shell, and they're lazy, so they'll give up or gain the least number to do it. Na has one extra electron so it gives it up to have a full shell below the shell that the extra electron was in. Cl has seven electrons in an outer shell, so it takes on an electron to make eight, rather than dropping seven. (This is not a perfect explanation, the more accurate one is much more complicated, but this theory holds for this purpose.)

They all just want to be stable.
Elements in Group I have one extra valence electron. So, their tendency is to get rid of it to form cations.
Elements in Group17, on the other hand, need one electron to complete their octet or to become stable. In the process they become anions.

I'm not sure but i think it's because atoms from group 1 have 1 valence electron so they intend to give it's elctron during reaction..The atoms from group 17 needs valence electron/s for them to be stable.

elements of group 1 have give 1 electron or accept 7 electrons to complete the octet. it is easier to give 1 electron than to accept 7 electron.as for 17th group elements it is easier to accept 1 electron than to give up 7 electrons.this is also because group 1 elements have lower nuclear charge than 17 group elements.
