Doing it once should not have caused major damage, use the clutch, doing it repeatedly will cause damage.

all the clutch does is removes the power from the gears so they can sync and engage. if you get the engine to the right speed sometimes it can flop into place without the clutch.. not good to do though. i often take my car out of gear to coast down hill and save gas without pushing the clutch in. no bang, grinding... there just can't be any torque on the gear box either from the engine pulling or the weight and momentum of the car pushing.

Once should not have caused any major damage as this happens all of the time; ever hear the term can't find them grind 'em? Always use your clutch, or you can eventually cause problems that will cost you down the road.

Ever try to press play on a audio tape player then push the tape in? That is EXACTLY what you are doing when you shift without using the clutch.
Don't get the tape player analogy????
Spin a bicycle wheel and try to put your hand between the spokes to stop it... imagine that going on under your car but with heavy metals... Yeah, not good my man!

No you shouldn't worry about it. The gearbox is pretty tough. Your foot was probably was on the clutch a little bit when you shifted into reverse, that's all, or you wouldn't have been able to do it at all.

Don't worry about it. A lot of times even when you hit the clutch you miss the gear (cuz you didn't press it down the whole way). If you always drive that way, you will wear down your gears, but everybody does it once in a while.

It did what it is supposed to do, the clutch prevents damage to the gears. One time probably not a problem.

Yes, the reverse is considered a gear shift, therefore you MUST use the clutch.

i own a repair shop, and its pretty hard on the trans mission ,you probably jerked a few good teeth of of the reverse gear ,and possibly broke a cyncronizer in it,it probably will cause you some trouble,if it isn't already dong it, if you got lucky enough this time not to tear it up,id really be care full with it from now on,because it can rip one apart from doing this, good luck,i hope this help,s.

You can do some serious damage and ruin the tranny. Dont make it a habit. If you have a problem now you will need expensive repairs.
