First the rules of the game:

1) I will participate in the experiment as well, and will make my results available to all of you prior to putting the question to vote and letting YOU decide the Best Answer.

2) I will keep the question open for a total of at least 1 (one) week so you’ll have ample time to perform the required task and report your results.

3) It is NOT necessary to do so, however, if you feel you would like to reserve your spot NOW and come back to report your results after having conducted the experiment, then simply write/answer “RESERVED” and your place in line will be automatically guaranteed.

4) This is NOT a Gedunken (i.e. Thought) experiment, Meditation, or an exercise in “Altered States of Consciousness”, but merely a REvirtuAL one (meaning: A broad based experiment to be conducted in REAL life with minimal use of virtual imagination/stimuli, and the results promptly reported in an on-line forum such as Y!A. Again, PLEASE, keep in mind that imagining a “Thought Experiment”, in this case, will NOT be equivalent to actually performing the task as prescribed in REAL life.)

5) SERIOUS PARTICIPANTS ONLY, PLEASE. This is your chance to take part in a groundbreaking experiment. If you feel this is a meaningless / silly experiment kindly refrain from participating (i.e. no CUTE commentaries, please).

Now, the actual experiment (involving a very simple task):

While taking a shower (preferably with the water in the pleasant temperature range, and plenty of it falling over your head and face) close your eyes and promptly press both hands against them until you can no longer see/detect any outside light whatsoever (you might still see some flickering lights due to residual optical effects – that’s normal). Now, imagine you are in the middle of the ocean (hundreds of miles from anywhere and actually in temperate water with no cloths or lifejacket or anything on) in a moonless night. Now in that setting imagine you were hit, on your side, by something from below. CAN YOU PLEASE DESCRIBE THE FEELING AND WHAT CAME TO YOUR MIND? (Again, please do not report your results NOW, but only after you have “actually” performed the experiment).

Looking forward to hearing your results, THANK YOU.

Final Observations/comments:

1- First of all, I would like to thank ALL of you once again for having participated in this REvirtuAL Experiment - especially those with more elaborated answers.

2- As promised, I am putting the question to vote. After all, there is NO right or wrong answer in this case.

3- I particularly enjoyed "gen" and "*"'s answers - thank you both for the care that you obviously put into your detailed answers. "*"'s answer was thoroughly enjoyable, if actually more “surrealistic” than "anomalous" – great start though. :-)

4- Miss C did NOT in the end really tell me about her experience in accords with the scenario that I had setup. Nonetheless, she remains as precious as ever. :-)

5- My poor dear Sheep - I must have unwillingly placed the fear of shark in her. LOL

6- As for MY vote in this case, it goes to "gen" for here wonderfully delightful and serene attempt to find some genuine “goodness” in an otherwise seemingly hopeless situation.

2006-11-07 17:15:40 · update #6

7- You are ALL truly exceptional examples of all that is wonderful in Humanity and I feel humbled and honored to be in your presence – anomalously or otherwise [:-)].

And now MY experience, as promised:

First a little background to put things into perspective (and satisfy the analytical cravings in all of us):

A few years back, while free diving, I had an actual close call of an encounter with a MASSIVE Tiger Shark (they specialize in eating marine turtles by the way, although they wouldn’t exactly turn up their noses at an occasional human or two either lol). … Anyway, as the shark was circling me with this disturbingly mean attack posture about him (all despite my pathetic attempts at heartbeat control and establishing telepathic communications lol) I sensed a curious sort of “feeling” penetrating my body, mostly around the ribcage area.

2006-11-07 17:17:50 · update #7

At that time, I still had the tiger shark well in my line of sight and could not detect anything (e.g. no objects, other animals) or anyone near me. And yet oddly enough that bizarre penetrating sensation kept getting more and more acute by the second, eventually to the point of completely distracting me from concentrating on the imminent danger of the shark. Just as I thought the situation was becoming hopeless, and to my great relief, I started noticing the shark changing directions and swimming away from me. At that very exact instant the penetrating sensation completely ceased, as well. I never did see the dolphins in the end, but wittingly or not they did save my life with their fabulous sonar. Afterwards, every time I am in the water, or in the shower, with my eyes closed, I am revisited by the same images.

2006-11-07 17:19:00 · update #8

And now my actual experience:

I started going through the setup thinking that I’ll surly reencounter the same old imagery again. To my pleasant surprise, though, when I sensed the feeling on my side this time I looked down into the darken depths and saw a most angelic and benevolent looking mermaid (some claim distant cousins of dolphins – at least the metaphor is there lol) asking me to join her. I said: Join you where? She replied: I am taking you back to the Mother Ship. And before I had a chance to even react or ask her which “Mother Ship”, she kissed me and we were transported into a parallel brane. I said: Look but I don’t even believe in an afterlife, if this is some sort of a premonition about the moment of my own death! She said NO, this “Mother Ship” is NOT of Being, Nothingness, Transcendence, or Beyond. … What do you reckon she was trying to tell me?

I accept the challenge.....er.....offer........ I think.

OK. This will, I think, be an anomalous answer, but what can I say, I must be having an anomalous day.

I was actually expecting a playful dolphin or not so playful shark. But what I felt was smaller, harder and colder than either of those would have been. I open my eyes and, looking down, find a translucent green glass bottle about the size of one of those iced tea bottles only with a somewhat bigger pour spout stopped with a big cork. My curiosity aroused I carefully withdraw the cork, reach down inside with thumb and forefinger and, to my utter surprise and delight, pull out a perfectly dry and still firm fortune cookie. As I've had nothing to eat in some time I greedily devour the unexpected treat. Now turning to the fortune which was inside the cookie all this while and still remains in my hand, I read,

"latitude 26 longitude 45
Help! I'm being held captive in a Chinese fortune cookie factory."

I think to myself,

"That's nice. Wonder if there are any more of those snacks around." :-)

I'm feelin' pretty good actually 'cause I'm no longer so hungry and I'm nowhere near latitude 26 longitude 45 so I'm off the hook even if this message ain't a hoax.

Ain't life a b*tch though?

Reservation for one swan-like-guinea pig for next week.

Ok....So, I'll be the first to report cause with my schedule I may not be able to get back to you in time.
Being first, sometimes has its advantages anyway....

TASK COMPLETED.
Interesting results follow......
Evaluation in your hands...

It's completely dark
I'm glad my eyes are closed
I don't like total darkness
So it's deffinately better
Having my eyes shut
I hear the water
I feel its wetness against my skin
It is really comforting
I feel like being born again
The great black sea
A second womb
I have never been afraid of the waters
However black and deep
I am not alone in the dark
It is I and the sea
And then, the water stirred
I am not disturbed
And then she "hit"
Still I am assured
She will never do me any harm
She is my friend
We have met before
Just last summer
When it was not so dark
And I was swimming in her waters
I stared right into her eyes
She looked at me for a minute
Then unhurriedly turned
And swam away
Now, thanks to Y!A
She came back and I am glad
May I introduce her
Caretta Caretta is her name
They say she is endangered
But she is endeared to me
And I always treasure every time
She hits the nerves of my memory
Real or "REvirtuAL"
Whichever it may be

Caretta Caretta is a Loggerhead Sea Turtle

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loggerhead_turtle

And THIS was the most creative question Y!A has ever seen.
