My computer is only about 4 years old and has the USB port in the front of the tower, so:
1). Why can't I get my computer to recognize my thumb drive?
and
2). How will I get it to recognize it?

If you are running Windows XP, it should be recognized immediately. Take a look at "My Computer." You should see a new drive. You can use it just like any disk drive.

If you are using Windows 98, you may need to install a driver. Go to the USB manufacturer's web site. They should have one you can download.

Be sure to try more than one port. Some more information would be helpful, like Windows 98, 2000, XP? Are other USB devices working?

Check the device manager to make sure the USB Root Hub doesn't show any errors. Follow the troubleshooting tips if there are errors there.

Make sure onboard USB is enabled in the BIOS (see your computer manual for how to access and change these settings... be careful in there).

Just some ideas... HTH

It depends on the computer and the OS.
First, is the thumb drive USB2? Your computer may only be capable of USB 1/1.1.
If you are using XP, once you plug the drive in, you may need to to to Start>Programs>Admin Tools>Computer Management>Disk management and activate it.
If the computer recognizes it, it should be listed there.
