They used to do that to people... if you don't give me a treat then I will trick you... when it first started the tricks were curses.

When the term first came out it was because you could choose between a prank gift like gum that turns yor mouth green or make your breath smell like poo instead of getting a variety of treats from different houses and neighborhoods.

... by trick (these days) it means "I will egg your house"
