Depends on the state you live in. I live in Jersey where just about anything but a rubber band gun can be deemed illegal at anytime.

I'm assuming in America, there is no yes/no for this. First off you need to define AK-47, a true AK-47 is Russian made and is selective fire in Semi-auto and Fully-automatic. These are LEGAL, yes LEGAL in all but 8 states. However you have to apply for a "license"(really it is a tax) to be able to purchase each class III weapon (selective fire, silenced, short barreled, etc.) you purchase. Getting this Class III Weapon Permit will vary in difficulty depending on what state/city you live in, what your criminal history is, etc.

There are semi-auto "AK-47s" that are exact copies of the real thing, without automatic capabilities. These are relatively inexpensive are are LEGAL in most states.

Here is a list of state laws regarding restricted firearms... http://www.westernfirearms.com/wfc/default?set=06

You ask what attack rifle then end your question with AR??? The M16 and AK47 are attack rifles.... An AR15 isn't..... Its as in case you requested us even if we adore Buick or Mercury then ask us what Honda we favor??? in any case i imagine i'm getting the idea.... An AR15 is more effective precise fingers down. And searching on the type or barrel its way more effective precise than any AK might want to desire to be... obviously you cant get a three round burst AR15. - nicely a minimum of not and not using a wide place of work artwork difficulty and that is notwithstanding in case your state facilitates it.... Why not get them both?? I have 4 AR15's and a pair of AK editions... even although the AR15 is more effective precise and outfitted more effective perfect the AK is interesting to shoot... both absolutely one of those rifles use lower priced ammo so as it really is a huge plus.... precise??? I in basic terms shoot at 12 or 15 inch metallic plates and silhouette objectives and both rifle's are diverse precise for that to seventy 5 and one hundred yards....... capturing little a million inch holes in paper is lame -- besides it really is not what both rifle became designed to do....

AK-47's come in assorted varieties. If it has an "auto" setting, you need to get a boxful of licenses, and damn well better not look bad on the application.
Unless you've been given "movement orders" and it's your personal weapon of choice for the environment etc. etc.
I personally find a lesser weapon more suitable for personal protection.

no it is not illegal to purchase or posess an AK-47 or any other assualt rifle as long as it is done through legal channels, and if you are willing to pay the price for the liscenses you can actually legally own a fully automatic weapon but it is a very expensive liscense to have

No not if it is semi automatic and you don't try to make it auto, go to a major gun dealer they would be able to give you more info on gun rights , responsibilities and the laws in your state as they apply to you!
