"One man can stand still in a flowing stream, but not in the real world." -Japanese Proverb

I think it means that you need friends and family to survive and stay strong in the real world. If there are any other meanings to this quote ...please share what you think

Standing in a flowing stream things he needs will come to him, he need not move because everything is moving around him he is the center of his universe, In the real world he must adapt to survive, he must go to what he needs it won't come to him.

I think this quote is meant to teach all of us that change is inevitable. When the world changes around us, out natural tendency is to resist (to stand still) but it does not truly work in the real world. We either get beaten by the water against the rocks on the way side or drown. Therefore it is best to simply go with the flow (the flowing stream)

Japan has a large population of Buddhists, and this really sounds like a Buddhist aphorism.

One of the common Buddhist aphorisms, regards the process of learning to meditate. At first one is lost in the motion of the flowing stream. Then, when one begins to meditate, one is like a rock watching the stream go by, and then finally, one realizes that there is no rock.

To me, this aphorism suggests that the meditation practice (which is at its best a total change in cognition from being lost in the "stream of thoughts" and "language chatter" and "missing what is truly going on" to actually being in the moment and observing, that seems sometimes "easy" enough while curled up in the lotus position on your cushion, is much more difficult to take out into your everyday life, and without constant and steady practice, will disintegrate when faced with the challenges presented by the stream of life.

HINT : unless you go do a little research on japanese Buddhism and really make sure you know what you're talking about, your teacher will recognize that you did not come up with this answer. I wouldn't use it without doing a little research!
