it is used in combination with peat moss and soil to make potting soil,you could use pearlite instead and i think its main purpose is to add drainage to the soil.I use one part peat moss and pearlite/vermiculite to two parts top soil to make my soil and organic manure is always a plus

What they said--I like to use vermiculite to start cuttings, for some reason the roots do better than starting cuttings in plain water. Just stick the cuttings in dry vermiculte, then water until fully saturated.
