Yes, an earring worn in the left ear of a man used to mean he has sailed around the Horn off the African coast. A very dangerous place for the older ships. Now it has no meaning what-so-ever. Most of the guys who wear them don't even know where the Horn is. Gypsy's who wore an earring in the right ear meant they were not spoken for. Again, most of the guys who wear them have never met a real gypsy. I remember when I was a child there was a tribe of Gypsy's living in tents just outside town in a field. The farmer who owned the field let them stay there for nothing. The police had the land owner kick them off so they could run them further out of town. They were always persecuted. They were so very different than everyone else was. The way they dressed and they way they talked. Not only that, the parents taught their children how to steal at a young age and there was no bad feelings about stealing from non Gypsy's then. They thought it was perfectly alright to do this. They march do a different drum than we do...

Some jerk I used to work with said, "Right is wrong", meaning of course that an earring in the right ear meant a guy was gay.

It doesn't mean much of anything these days, though.

Heterosexual guys wear earrings, and they sometimes have piercings in both ears.

I don't know, maybe some people would still wonder if a guy had just his right ear pierced. But people are really as*sholes sometimes, too.

An earring in the wearer's left ear signified someone dominant sexually, an earring in the wearer's right ear signified someone passive sexually, and an earring in both ears signified someone being either dominant or passive. As straight guys started getting earrings, it was perceived that that an earring in the wearers left ear meant that the wearer was not gay. Today, there is not as much meaning attached to a man having earrings or not.

Because they like the way it looks. One earring, 2 earrings, left ear, right ear......it doesn't have any meaning.

They think it makes them look attractive. The earrings no longer mean anything.
