If I want to set up a back-up system for the two PCs and laptop in my house, do I simply add up the sizes of the hard drives and find a black box in that combined size? How much space do I really need?

Anyone know a good reference (e.g. CNET or other) that has good advice on this?

Buy the biggest NAS (network attached storage) drive you can find that won't break the bank. This is a good thing to do, because no matter how many more computers you get, you will be able to back-up your files. If at all available buy the Buffalo Terastation, giving you a whole terabyte of data. If not you can buy a network drive enclosure, and any type of hard drive that will suit your needs. Tigerdirect.com has a good selection of hard drives.

how much of the hard drives are you using. if you have 2 100gig drives but only use 8 gigs on each, no sense buying a 200 gig hard drive to back them up with. Just add up what space you are using and maybe double it. If you plan on adding a ton of pics or music or games in the future then go bigger.

I would say you are right. And CNET is a good place to search, but also call you local PC repair shop and tell them what you want, as if you were shopping for a backup hard drive, they will tell you what you need and a price. Then you can buy one yourself and install.
