I was actually just at the sphinx 1 week ago our tour guide said that though many beleive it was napoleon it was actually the arabs who according to the strongest part of your face is the nose so by removing it they were taking dignity away from the country, but I have read numerous reasons. My tour guide was an egyptologist

some say the rock that was used had a crack that grew over time and the nose finally fell off.
others state a bomb broke it off back during one of the wars.
as far as I know....there is no 100% answer.
