Here are some things you should know and be on the lookout for:
(1) When did you take him to the ER, how long has he been tacking the antibiotic and how much time has passed since he was seen by a doctor?
(2) Anytime you have a fever it is a sign of an infection and he should be followed closely by a doctor.
(3) Most antibiotics take anywhere from 7-14 days to work. If the pain and fever persist beyond that, and don't show signs of improvement, get worse, turn hot and red at the sight, or it should develop a foul odor and or a strange dark color, go back to the ER immediately!

Registered Nurse here; Yes you should most definitely take your husband back to the Emergency Room. Did they lance the boil? Weather they did or not, take him back to the E.R. this type of boil is usually caused by a bacteria called MRSA(Methecillen Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus). It is wicked and hard to kill. I have had 4 outbreaks since April of this year. It's currently sweeping our nation. With each abscess I had they admitted me to the hospital, incision and drained the wound, sent the contents of for culture and sensitivity. Each was MRSA, and required IV antibiotics. Not trying to scare you, but most assuredly he needs to go back to the Emergency Room.

My friend had one the same thing happened to him..when the fever started and all the pain...the boil was ready to burst..within a hour his boil broke and all the fluid went everywhere...it was still real sore but his fever went away. but he had to stay on meds for 7 more days..so watch out when it breaks..if your scared for any reason call the er and talk with a nurse she will tell you what you should do..good luck

Take him back to the ER.

Insist that the boil be incised. See if you can get them to get a surgeon, but if necessary one of the ER doctors can do it.

if there is a fever - that is not good - take him back - boils are horrible and incredibly painful - it will settle you both. Call for the triage nurse before you go....tell her you are coming back in.

Go back, he could have a systemic infection and go into shock. Demand that they do blood cultures with IV antibiotics and do not leave until they do so!

Don't chase it take him in, would it be better to hear the Dr. say he's OK he just needs bed rest or no he needs to go to the hospital because of bla bla bla, I know you are thinking he's OK you have seen this before, don't take the risk.

i would either call your family physician or go to the ER again...probably the ER since you were already there once for this same problem and now it's worse...they probably gave you instructions to come back if it got worse.
