I can handle this question for you, but you're probably not going to like my answer if you're looking for a cure. I'm a graduate student in psych and my field of specialty is Criminology, so we deal with your subject alot.
The true definition of sadism: someone who expereinces pleasure--and often sexual arousal--from inflicting pain on others, is actually a trait of a Sociopath. Most psychiatrists used to use the word "psychopath" but most prefer sociopath nowadays, since it's more accurate. The afflicted person is not insane: they usually know the difference between right and wrong, they just don't care.
A lot of shrinks won't even try to deal with sociopaths, since they are usually not honest in conveying their feelings and only tell us what we want to hear. And the recovery rate for a diagnosed sociopath is dismally low.
But the best bet would be a combination of therapy and medication. Some of the newer anti-depressant drugs, which increase the Serotonin level in the brain, can be effective. But the cure rate for sociopathology is lower than even that of schizophrenia.
In closing, let me say: I'm talking a bout a true sadist here. Not just a person with anger control problems.

Well, I"ll be brave and answer as a Christian might. Pray over (even mentally) or for or with the concerned person. If you want to do this, it will be even better if you gather as many praying believers as possible to be with you and pray as you do it.
