If the lack of substance is REALLY your issue with it, you're clearly not listening to the right stuff. Like any music there's good and bad. You want substance? Check out The Roots. There are some true artists out there-- beyond top 40 radio. Just like in rock music-- there's Bruce Springsteen on one hand, but there's also Poison on the other. Wouldn't be fair to castigate rock music just because hair metal sucked.
It's a rare occasion when art and commercial success coincide. My guess is that you just don't like rap-- for whatever reason-- maybe you like guitars and you don't hear them in rap. Certainly it's OK not to like a particular type of music, but if your desire is to find rap with "deep human emotion" look in a different place--that music does exist.

Ok, well I agree with some of the answers however, I have always loved music and like almost all of it, music is my total outlet and soothing at the best! I don't feel that rap degrates women and thats a fact, only one of us can do that to ourselves, nobody can force us to do anything against our will, also,if we take a certain music i.e. country my wife left me,my dog died etc... well check out Brooks & Dunn's Play Something Country, trust me these gals are deffinatelly rap if you feel all scantily women are only in rap, also Trace Atkins, Honkytonkbadonk, the title gives it pretty much away, I just think it is sad when we say we hate anything, the one thing I hate is the word hate, wow what an awful word, if nothing else for Tupax's memory loose the hate, how about giving some a chance, there is alot I don't enjoy, my prefference would not be to listen to rap all the time, thus I don't purchase it, if everyone did the same then they'd have to change something, sad though nobody says the good the artists do,my point many support their communities especially PDiddy, nothing in papers, Snoop samething, oh and 50 was on Craig Fergusson, man what a disgrace I was disgusted Craig tried hard to get him to say anything to get him perhaps killed, I personally loved Over & Over with 50&& Tim McGraw, huge hit for them, my point there is good in everything we just have to look for it, Ludacris is great in my opo, Justin, not, too bubblegummy for me,but heck we all are allowed our opo's right, have a good one everyone and keep loving music but not violence too much in this world already!

No I don't. No offense but if you hate it how can you know that there is none that comes from the heart. I would bet you've never heard of artists/groups like The Roots, Talib Kweli, Blackstar, Common, Goodie Mob, Gangstarr. They all have positive things to say. You might be basing your opinion on what you hear on the radio or see on tv. That stuff is mostly party type music, very sexual usually, b/c sex sells. I guess just be glad there are many types of music so you don't have to listen to it.
Woah, wait a minute, don't rock n roll & pop songs have half naked women in their videos too. There are groupies for all types of music & well, men will be men, which means half naked women. Geesh! As if rap is the only one . . .

I agree with you but only to a certain point. I don't hate the new hip hop or rap. I'm a huge fan of Eminem, but i am also a huge fan of lil wayne & soulja boy, etc. True, MOST of their songs only talk about girls sex & money but some of their songs actually mean something. You should listen to Drake, most of his songs are pretty good too. But the answer to you're question; Yeah, it is true that most of new rap is only about sex etc but some of it is arightt. :)

You are right to some degree, but not all hip hop/rap is that way. It is true that today, the songs repeat themselves and mostly talk about material goods, but you can still find some decent stuff out there. I personally don't hate it.

I love rap, but i don't like the commercial rap like rappers talking about rims and stupid chains...But raps what 2pac wrote or the old Nas or Eminem...That's the rap i have respect for...Alll lyrical.....THey teach 2pac's poetry in UNiversities...better show some respect
OOOOO PLEASEEEE DISRESPECTFUL TO WOMEN???? have you ever been to a Club? Have you seen what women dress like when they go there? no body forces them to dress like that...or have you seen them get drunk as hell? They make themselves degrating, all rappers do is that they see that stuff and just portray it to your TV...please fix your community before you blame RAP for degrating women...Blame your own White hollywood "American Pie" for degrading women
But as long as American Pie does it then its all good right???

I grew up listening to the old rap classics....i am still hip to the old school...and when i say old school i mean Tribe, De La Soul....i think the stuff they play now is very predictable and unfulfilling. So I agree. I just really love the old stuff.....*sigh*

I like some of it, like mostly the songs that have been out for a while. And I hate some of the music. Like most of the songs out right now, I hate. But suprisingly I like the new song from Justin timberlake "Let me be your love". I love the hip-hop and rap songs that have good beats to them and that you can dance to.

I agree. I mostly don't like rap & hip-hop unless it's something that catches my ear & has something intelligent to say, like Tupac or Dr Dre. I find most just promotes violence, segregation, excessive lifestyles and abuse toward women.
