I was just wondering if anyone had any proven methods of studying for an essay style test, and what those methods were. Also, if you have any new ideas, that would be cool too. Best answer gets 10 points!!!!

Well, I have taken many essay style tests in high school and college, and I usually do quite well. My best advice is simply to really know the matierial. The more you can write on a subject demonstrates your knowledge and ability to apply that knowledge, which is the goal of most essays. Good essays also have a very clear thesis statement, which is a sentence or two that states the topic or main point of the essay. For example: "The fall of the Roman empire resulted from three major factors..." (and then continue to list the factors you will discuss in the body of your essay.) Every point you make in your essay should relate to the thesis. A good way to practice this is to write a practice thesis and make a list of points to support it. Then it is only a small step to flesh out an entire essay based on your list or outline. Another good habit with essays is to start thinking about what you want to write well in advance- most professors will give a good feel for what you will be required to write about, so you have time to think. When it is time for the test (or paper, or whatever) take a few minutes to make a little outline for yourself to follow as you write. This way you can keep track of what you are writing and ensure you make all your points. Lastly, use the best spelling and grammar possible. Most teachers won't take off for minor spelling errors, but grammar and correct, clear sentence structure is an important part of essay writing. If you have time, read through your essay once you have finished it to make sure it is cohesive.

Good luck- and remember, practice makes perfect. Use your time wisely.

Ok...I dont think there really arnt any "proven" methods for studying essays...but what I have experienced is that essay tests are usualy given when you already have the question and answer.... I would go over the chapters in the book that the essays are covering...and then go over the question and answers...get the basic points memorized and then you can elaborate when your taking the test.

Like the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. As long as you feel confident that you know the material, and keep revising your notes, then you should be fine. If you can get access to test questions from previous years, and practice writing essays on those questions, you will gain the experience of knowing the style of questions they ask, the depth of the subject matter they want you to get into with your essay, and it's just great experience for the real thing. I truly wish you well in your exams.
