Ok a Cobolt SS is basically a Cavelier Z24.It is a 2.4 V4 with 173hp. The SS supercharged coup comes with a 2.0 V4 205hp

The 1980 Corvette. Base engine 350 V8 190hp ni California V8 305 180hp. Optional 350 V8 230hp.

2 totaly different cars. If the vette is in good condition I say the vette. But if it is the base model and farely worn down. The cobalt might pull it out off the line but not in the long run.

Coming from someone that owns a 07 cobalt SS. The cobalt is underrated at the factory and dynos around 250 horse at the motor in a 2800 lb car...it also produces more horsepower per liter than the 2007 Z06.

The 1980 corvette was crap...I have driven them before.

A cobalt would wipe its chevy emblem with a 1980 corvette...in fact I encourage someone who has one..please...say your stock 80's vette is faster..I would love to race you for slips.

1980 Chevrolet Corvette L82 = 7.4sec 0-60 & 15.4sec Quartermile (motortrend)

2007 Cobalt SS = 5.8sec 0-60 & 14.0sec Quartermile (motortrend)

Goes to show you how many people are clueless out there...they say the vette because of the name when it will get its butt handed to it. how sad.

The 1980 vette had 3 engine possibilities. The 350 ci was normal but California models got a 305 ci. because of emission controls. The 350 from the factory had 190 hp. With the L-82 engine...230 hp. Weight is 3,336 lbs

The Cobalt has either 148 hp 175hp or 205hp and weighs either 2991 lbs or less than 2800 lbs depending on engine and trim. Various sites had differing statistics, including a supercharger.

Depending on specific options, the vette should out perform if it has the L-82. If not, it should be a close race.

1/4 mile was around 16.8 sec. Top end was about 108 mph Skid pad results were .75 on the vette. You check the resulting test scores for the Cobalt cause my 1989 98 Olds were better than the vette

With the same driver, or with different drivers in each car?
Drag race, or road course?
Tight turns or Broad turns?

It depends. I can't tell you what the 1/4 mile times, or the 0-60mph are for each car, but I can tell you that all three of those things I named can make a huge difference.

When I used to autocross, at least once a month there would be some guy show up with his brand new vette or porsche or whatever acting all hot about his car, and how it was the latest and greatest car on the planet. Then they'd get beat by a Miata or VW or the like drvien by one of the expert drivers, and they'd end up going home with their tail between their legs.

On some road courses with tight turns, I've seen novice drivers in Miatas get just as good times as veteran drivers in Corvettes - because the small size of the car made it easier to manuever a narrow, twisty course. Likewise, I know a girl who won a Bracket racing competition in a Jeep Cherokee, pissing off a lot of guys who drove souped up Camaros and Mustangs, because she was a better, more consistant driver than they were.

Through the late 70's and into the 80's, and even the early 90's, GM made their motors pretty weak on horsepower. I'd be willing to be that most stock vehicles today would probably beat the 1980 Vette.
