From reading that article, I would say that Deschamps has an interesting way of being vague... I mean, if he said, "It is very difficult for a goalkeeper to win the Golden Ball, although I obviously hope that Buffon will represent an exception," he could at least give some encouragement to Buffon, just for the sake of his self-confidence.
As their coach, he could still keep a positive attitude when discussing Juventus. It would really help boost their morale, and, after all, it's the politically-correct thing to do for their fans. =)

Everyone has a chance at this. It's not the WC award, it is for player of the year, inclusive of their entire season.
Addition: OK my Internet is behaving again and I have just been able to read the article. Juve, sorry, no offense but he said nothing wrong. he praised Buffon and his talent, but merely stated that it is not just a world cup performance that counts. Most fans would be inclined to remember he WC, but must remember the performances of all players throughout the entire season.
Deschamps has done a great job and would not wish ill will to players under his guidance.

I'd like him to win. He's one of my favourite players put up a wonderful performance throughout the WC and--unlike many other footballers, note Ashley Cole--has some sense of grace, deportment.
Anyway, I think goalkeepers deserve some credit. Still, there are many others who could win and possibly would win: Thierry Henry, Cannavaro, those are the hot favourites, Eto'o is good too, David Villa is currently in fantastic form--go to you-tube to watch some of his goals...etc.
I wish Buffon luck and if not this time, then next time and if never, well, he's still got fans to love him!

Yeah. Maybe he'll go with Thiery Henry. But then again, Henry did not have a good WC.
I think the performance at the WC will carry lots of weight this time.
