To me closure is this...
When my ex dumped me, it hurt me alot. Eventhough she moved on, I found it hard to. I had a hard time not thinking about her.
But now, I can think about her without it hurting anymore. All I wish her is the best.
(It didnt hurt that she came back to me on her knees begging for me to tak her back)
Closure to me, is just moving on. It does alot of good. It lets you know that you can live without the other person. And eventhough it doesnt feel like it at the time, things really will get better.

I think personal closure is necessary, but what varies is what it takes for each person to find this. There's a moment after the end of every relationship wherein each person finally gives up on it. This doesn't mean it's impossible to rekindle, should circumstances change, but there's a point at which the end of the relationship is felt to be final, and that's accepted, and it stops tearing your heart out. For some people, this might take a specific "talk" after the breakup, or a ritual purging of all things that remind you of the person. I tend to just need a little time.

I think it is where both parties have a clear understanding and mutual consent to end a relationship. This is particularly important if there was no sign of problems and one party decides to get out. It is very hurtful if the other party does not understand why. Closure helps the people involved to heal and to go on with their lives.

If you had closure you'd know it... if you've been stressing over a previous relationship and all of a sudden one day you realize "I don't care anymore" and that's a huge weight off your shoulders.
