It's a joke. A meaningless answer to suggest that there *is* no answer - or if there is, we couldn't understand it.

OK, yes we all get the Hitchhiker's reference. But here's a bit of trivia that most people don't know:
In computers, every character has a certain numerical value which is how it's stored in memory. This coding scheme is called ASCII.
In most every operating system, the asterisk character (*) is used as a wildcard character to denote "everything." For instance if you're doing a search for *.txt, you're searching for every file ending in .txt.
Now guess what the asterisk's ASCII code is? You got it: 42. The asterisk, as the wildcard character, represents everything, which of course includes life and the universe. Thus, life, the universe and everything can be represented by the asterisk, which in turn has the value of 42.

To paraphrase Deep Thought a bit; The Answer is 42, but I'm not sure that you understand the question.
If you ever find out the question, be sure to tell the mice, they are very keen to know.

It's as absurd as the other things in the book. You have to understand all of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's called "humor."
