Ante Meridiem and Post Meridiem

The Latins called noon as "meridiem" when the sun was at the highest point in the sky.

a.m. = ante meridiem meant "before noon"
and
p.m. = post meridiem meant "after noon"

Mane - AM (for morning)
Nocte- PM (for night)

I know it sounds simple, but Romans had little need for AM and PM. They ran on military time like the US Army does.

If you meant what the abbreviations meant, they are Ante Meridiem (A.M.) and Post Meridiem (P.M.)
