A hero usually fulfills the definitions of what is considered good and noble in the originating culture. Some scholars place the willingness to sacrifice the self for the greater good as the most important defining characteristic of a hero. However, in literature, particularly in tragedy, the hero may also have serious flaws which lead to a downfall, e.g. Hamlet. Such heroes are often called tragic heroes.

Sometimes a person might achieve a high enough status to become courageous in people's minds. This often leads to a rapid growth of myths around the person in question, often attributing him or her with extraordinary powers.

Some social commentators prescribe the need for heroes in times of social upheaval or national self-doubt, seeing a requirement for virtuous role models, especially for the young [cite this quote]. Such myth-making may have worked better in the past: current trends may confuse heroes and their hero-worship with the cult of mere celebrity.

Some suggestions. Look up info on firefighters on 9/11 and also Flight 93. See if you can find a bio of Audie Murphy, a hero from WW2.
Anyone can be a hero. A man who works hard and takes care of his family is a hero. A school teacher who passes along knowledge and goals despite being poorly paid is a hero.

There are so many facets to being a hero. For some of us it defines a parent, a soldier, a mentor, a dying child, a cancer survivor, the neighbor that happened to know CPR, or the EMT that gave recourse and life to a suicide victim............or simply by definition, they have shown others acts of kindness during situations of distress.

My Father was military, my brothers are and were ( for the one lost) fire and rescue. My family has been a part of what I feel to be the Proud and Many that give themselves to be defined as HERO'S. I read the following at my Father's funeral.

Read this:

"Badge Of Courage"

My badge is one of courage,
or so I am told.
It speaks of a job,
the one that I now hold.

It has so many faces,
forces on every level.
Pinned to my chest,
my name is but a number.

We fight on every spectrum,
for all of mankind.
We are the few and proud,
that labor clean and loud.

Our vow is strong and true,
we do all that is asked.
Giving all we have,
our life will out last.

I see so many frightful things,
my sleep is so disturbed.
Leaving work and going home,
to you I say no word.

Today I saw a child,
floating in the water.
I had to tell her mother,
and plan my word so mild.

Last night I came to rescue,
a man in some distress.
Fire engulfed the building.
they laid him down to rest.

We heard a 911,
and came to some location.
There was a tiny baby,
I tried resuscitation.

Frantically he called,
don't leave me to die.
I sit beside my buddy,
and heard his last sigh.

Yesterday I listened,
to a fearful teen.
Get away from me,
for this I surely mean.

I will kill you all,
for what's been done to me.
I hate this life of mine,
can't you even see.

Within a dim lit room,
we found a little boy.
Restrained to a potty chair,
his eyes swollen shut.

His thin and tiny body,
held wounds so very deep.
The Captain being a mighty man,
couldn't help but weep.

They cast a net across the water,
to find his wife and child.
All the while he whimpered.
so meek and even mild.

No one would ever guess,
he caused their demise.
All these things I live with,
my emotions in disguise.

I tell my family nothing,
to keep them from the harm.
Of all I have to live with,
this man of so much charm.

I filter our conversation,
and say the least I can.
All that I can hope for,
is to be a better man.

I would say that a Hero is a common person. A man, woman or child afforded that one moment in time to make a difference in someone's life.

Who do you admire? Look up to? It could be someone well known, or just someone in your neighborhood or family who does something like helping kids learn to read, or collecting food for the poor. We all have different traits we admire in people, and different ideas of what we think helps others. Your hero could also be a parent that you've always thought set a good example for you and your siblings. Maybe cared about how you grew up.
Good luck with your project.
