A spark jumping across a gap full of lighter fluid causes a portion of the gaseous lighter fluid to explode and light the column of gases, also known as "lighting" an electronic lighter.

An eltric lighter? I think it's quartz crystal in the spark generator that creates the spark. A fire needs fuel, oxygen, and enough heat [all in the correct proportions] to burn. Try not to blow anything up.

what you have is a piezzo element. it's a type of quartz that when struck sharply, it gives off an electric discharge. if you will notice there is a wire coming out of it. there is also a metal cap or something that is ground on it. the spark has to have somewhere to go in order for it to happen.try putting the wire close to the metal cap and click it. you should get a spark. piezzo is used for other things too llike speakers. when you put electricity to the quartz it bends it and it produces sound. look it up. it's pretty cool

pushing the button creates a current, then theres a small gap in the wire that creates a spark

battery inside it maybe flat.

it needs a source of energy (electricity) to create the spark needed to ignite the gas.

flammable gas + ignition source = flame
