It's freedom of THE press. The press refers to the media, in the past just the newspapers but now expanded to mean all media. Freedom of the press is important because it protects journalists who might otherwise be unable to print their stories. Western countries preserve freedom of the press. Some countries with more restrictive governments may sometimes try to gag journalists or get them to print what the governmetn wants them to write. Sometimes journalists are punished if they release a story the government disagrees with.

Freedom of press means to have freedom to report the things as it is without fear. It also doesn't mean to write anything that they wish.

There is no specific law that provides "freedom of the press"; It is simply an extention/ application of "freedom of speech".

However, the courts have limited both of these freedoms in regards to "if such expression would cause damage to the innocent (so to say).

Examples:

It is illegal to yell "fire" in a crowded theater.

It is illegal to print something false about a person, if said statement does damage to an innocent person.
