Will a standard USB external hard drive from a computer work on the XBox?

i do not believe so but u can put a thumb drive into the usb port and save but unless its a really exsensive one it wont hae enough memory. best way to save if u dont want to use the hard drive on the xbox 3 is to buy a memory card

You can access files off of it.. you just cant save to it.

I think only PS3 will have the ability to use that.
