Causes of the French Revolution include the following:
A poor economic situation and an unmanageable national debt were both caused and exacerbated by the burden of a grossly inequitable system of taxation, the massive spending of Louis XVI and the many wars of the 18th century;
A resentment of royal absolutism;
An aspiration for liberty and republicanism;
A resentment of manorialism (seigneurialism) by peasants, wage-earners, and, to a lesser extent, the bourgeoisie;
The rise of Enlightenment ideals;
Food scarcity in the months immediately before the revolution;
High unemployment and high bread prices resulting in the inability to purchase food;
A resentment of noble privilege and dominance in public life by the ambitious professional classes;
A resentment of religious intolerance;
The failure of Louis XVI to deal effectively with these problems

The Stupid Heartless Rich were living in a make-believe world where they were pampered and happy and believed it would always remain so. The starving, downtrodden poor lived in the same city but a very different world. You can only take so much ignorance and abuse before you grab your pitchforks and take control of your life.
The first paragraph of "A Tale of Two Cities" is a perfect explanation of the huge gap between the rich and the poor.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
The poor people of the 21st century who break their backs so we can shop at Walmart and drink $5.00 coffee at Starbucks are going to grab their pitchforks one of these days.
