I'm looking into the Samsung A900m or the A920. I've heard you can't fit very many songs on it though (wouldn't buying additional storage solve this?).
It's either this or a cheap cell phone and a separate cheap .mp3 player.
What should I do and why? If I can fit enough songs on the phone I'd rather go that route.

Instead get a cell phone and an mp3 player. Its nice to have them both on one device, but what happens when youre enjoying the music, and youre battery runs out right when you need to make a phone call. It happens to often.

if the phone takes memory cards, then, yes, buying additional storage will solve this...however, the audio quality of the phones is going to be less than what you'd get with a good mp3 player.

Mate, i have a Nokia 6233! It's sound quality is awsome (when using included headphones). The sound is as good as, if not better than an ipod. It uses microSD, and for 100 bucks off ebay u can get a 2gb memory card. 1gb - 50 bucks. The phone rarely goes flat cos i charge it every night.
Rethink why u need two things when u could have one. But its up to you.
