Ugh, I sympathize with her.
Sadly, it is going to hurt and she will probably experience leakage. There are many things she can do to allievate the pain and engorgement. As for the length of time, it depends on how many feedings she was doing before she decided to wean. I was informed to slowly cut out a feeding every three to seven days depending on the pain I was in. The reason why you do it slow, so your breasts aren't hard and have blocked ducts; your body will learn that the milk supply is no longer needed for that feeding.
She can also use a wash cloth to take away the heat and tynelol for the pain - she can express the milk by hand and make sure the knots or blocked ducts are working out too.

Yea, cabbage in the bra might help! When I got home from the hospital (after 4 days there), oh my goodness I filled up quick, and it was very painful. I used ice packs- that really helped. It'll get better, just takes a little bit!

What is the Cabbage thing? I breast fed my son for 6 mo. he is now 20 mo old and my boobs still leak. But when they would hurt I would stand in a warm shower. I don't know if it actually helped but atleast felt like I was doing something.

It can take a while, and most doctors won't give you anything to make it faster. Cabbage leaves, warm packs, and a very tight bra are about all we have, and just waiting it out.
When I weaned my boys, it took about a week and a half before I wasn't jus tin constant pain, and the whole proccess took about a month.

Try to manually express it if it starts to hurt, that is what I did. It helps relieve the pressure, and if there is no consistency with a baby sucking on the nipple, your body will quit producing. Try doing warm compresses to relieve the knots, and YES cabbage works wonders.

Cabbage leaves in the bra, ice packs for the swelling and ibuprofen for any discomfort.
Or better yet...convince her to at least try giving some of the milk to the baby. :-)

Cabbage leave are fine, it is the chlorophyll that does it, but a darker vegetable leave like Collard greens works better.
In addition my kid's mother also used Campho faneek. It hasen drying them up as well as relieve.

Wrap them up in an ace bandage and wera a bra they won't stop hurting but it will stop the throbbing and tingling hurt. It will usually take 1-2 weeks
