Hi! I sprained my ankle and I five days ago and I couldn't walk on it! I was told I only had a lot of swollen tissue and that they didn't think I tore anything at all! I have school and wearing crutches is really draining. I don't feel any pain anymore from when I do walk on it, but I feel that if I went a whole day at school without crutches that I could reinjure it again! Am I ok or should I just wear the crutches to be safe and then gain it back slowly?

When you get a sprain, it means you tore your ankle ligaments. Whoever told you you didn't tear anything does not know what he's talking about. Sprains are graded according to severity(grades 1-3). Normally sprains take about 3 weeks to heal. You can do away with crutches if you feel confident enough but stay off sports for at least 3-6 weeks. Keep walking on your ankle(called functional treatment) but don't abuse it.

If you are able to walk on it then do so. It will strengthen the muscles in your ankle again rather than allowing them to diminish. Don't do more than your body can take. Walk on it for a while and if it starts to hurt go back on crutches.

usually in a sprain, u only need crutches from 1 week to 4 weeks. u should be fine, just go easy at first, dont do any major sports that involve running (i.e; soccer, cross country, etc.) hope u get better, and that this helps!

try using going down to one crutch, and see how you do with that...then move on to no crutches
