Artifacts is the term used by archeologists, anthropologists and historians to designate any object, weather natrually occuring or the result of either direct or indirect action, that is evidence of an animal, primate, person, group of persons or civilization was located in a particular place. This could be fossilized bones, porrtery shardes, the remnants of structures or any number of other things. As an example, Dinosaur fossils, The treasures of King Tut, and Stonenhenge are all considered as atrifacts. Age is not a true determining factor as even objects from WWII Korea or Viet Nam are considered artifacts by collectors and historians.
Hope that helps.

Artifacts are items that were made long ago. THe person who made that specific artifact would be long dead. For example at Pompeii after the volcano erupted. Scientists would find many artifacts under the ash.
