There are different ways of dividing the nation into groups, and slightly different definitions of those groups.
The version I subscribe to divides the nation into four groups: the Northeast, the Midwest, the South, and the West.
The Northeast is all the states northeast of the Potomac River: Me., N.H., Vt., Mass., Conn., R.I., N.Y., N.J., Penn,. Del., and Md. - with perhaps D.C. thrown in for good measure.
The South is all the states that are south of the Potomac and Ohio Rivers - W. Va., Ky., Va., N.C., S.C., Ga., Fla., Ala., Miss., and Tenn., plus the southern parts of the Mississippi Valley and Great Plains - Okla., La., Tex., and Ark.
The Midwest is the states north of the Ohio River, also the central and northern Great Plains - Oh., Ind., Ill., Mich,. Wis., Minn., Iowa, Mo., N.D., S.D., Neb., Kan.
The West is all the remaining states - Mont., Wyo., Colo., N.M., Utah, Ariz., Idaho, Wash., Ore., Nev., Calif., Alaska and Hawaii.

The placement of Texas and California is debatable.

You may be able to find a website that gives widely accepted definitions, but here is an approximation. Keep in mind that the borders of these regions are not universally agreed on. The best you can do is know that certain states are ALWAYS considered to be in a particular region (while others are sometimes included and sometimes not).
Midwest: Ohio to Kansas to North Dakota
Southwest: Texas and Oklahoma to Arizona (maybe as far north as Utah and Colorado; possibly even Nevada)
Northwest: Washington and Oregon
Northeast: Pennsylvania and everything that is east and north of it
Southeast (often referred to as just the South): everything south of Pennsylvania (not including West Virginia), and continuing west as far as the Mississippi River; Missouri, Arkansas, and Texas are sometimes included

North west states are in the top left hand corner. South east are in the bottom right hand corner. Do you see a pattern developing?
Mid west are what is left over.
