I used to build ST model ships, I am a pretty big fan of the shows. Why I bought them, I suppose it's like owning memorabilia, action figures, and baseball card type things; wanting to own your own little piece of it.
Personally though, I like to build things, always have. There's just something satisfying about seeing the culmination of all your hard work. I became an engineer because I liked to build things and/or see how they worked.
Building ST models is an extension of both those things. Killing two birds with one stone sorta thing.
My ST models however, never really turned out so well. It was from my much younger days. I've learned that patenience is much more of a factor in building models. I've build some very nice cars more recently though.
BTW, feel free to ask me more questions. You can email me at my yahoo answers name @ yahoo.

Because it's fun, I like the designs, and I get a memento. :)
Generalities on making things (be it models, cards, rubber stamping, drawings, woodworking, knitting, decorating, baking, gourmet cooking, etc.):
- It's fun to build/make/create/draw things. It's even better if it is a subject that one loves.
- It's personalized since it is individually hand-built/crafted.
- It shows patiences, skill, & attention to detail. Skills that can improve & that can be admired.
- If done better than average, it can be a source of pride & admiration from peers.
On Star Trek starships:
- I love the starships. There are some beautiful aesthetic designs that are sleek & well thought-out. Unfortunately, there are some butt-ugly ones too.
- The Federation starships are symbols of the United Federation of Planets and the positive ideals for which it stands. It is a symbol of power & might, but it is also one of peace, diplomacy, & exploration.
- It's communal - one can join the crew/team (or at least image it). You can't be Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, nor Archer, but you can be one of the crewmembers and a part of the ideals.
- The starships shelter the crew, protect them, and enable to them to travel to distant places of exotic worlds & inhabitants.
Bottom line: It's the embodiment of the dreams & imagination of what can be and the possibilities that come from it. There is "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations."
On Star Trek starship models:
Owning one of the starships can invoke nostagia & imagination. Building one makes that connection much stronger & more personal with the care & patience put into assembling, painting, & detailing a dream that will ultimately bring one back to Star Trek universe.
Anyway, feel free to email if you have questions. Good luck with the article!

I don't build them, but my husband does, and he will spend hours in his little space he has made himself in the garage, tweaking out every tiny detail. I say "yeah!!!" for models. It keeps him out from underfoot, teaches him patience and keeps him out of trouble.

To remind me of my lack of patience and my short temper for little plastic pieces that don't seem to fit anywhere! Other than that, though, it's pretty relaxing... *sigh*
