At the HS level most clubs expect you practice before and after school. Meets are on weekends. If you are past skills and at the speed level you will do every stroke and IM's for an average of 250-500 meters each stroke. Prior to getting in the water you will do dry land, weights, aeorbics for one hour. You will practise with fins/boards and resistance equit. Swimming is the most demanding sport I have ever been a part of. You push past pain at every practice and then at meets you pull it all together and work the hardest you have ever worked. It is a sport that will teach you perserverance and endurance. You will learn there is not much you cannot do if you are willing to work hard.

Speaking as a former coach and paent of a swimmer now

YES

It should be hard work... if you like it the time will go by fast if not then it will be slow.

You will have to work through the stiffness and discomfort if yu are not used to swimming on that level...
Take Motrin after your workout but NOT before
Taking it before can mask injury.. your bodies way of tellig you to stop is with pain... so you never want to mask that while you work out.. you risk further injury...

Also... sleep well, eat well,,, but not before practice as you may get an upset tummy

And finally Stretch stretch and strretch! Its boring and seems stupid but stretching is key to injury prevention and cramps!

good Luck.. hope you have a great coach and a better season!

Swimming is not the only thing a high school team does. They also lift weights and run. My son's team practiced and 1-1/2 before school and 2-1/2 hours after school. Plus swim meets. I do not remember him being so sore that he felt bad tho.

Swimming is one of the hardest sports, physically because there is not a lot of standing around, or down time, like in football and baseball. I coach swimming, and we practice 1.5 hours in the morning and 2.5 -- 3 hours after school. Our workouts consist of a lot of swimming, lifting weights and stretch cord work. Don't let the works scare you away though, swimming is a great sport and not only will it whip you into shape, it will whip your mind into shape also.

defintly depends on the team... my team practices 3 1/2 hours a day, and its hard work we max out at 7,800 yards for normal practices and for saturday practices 10,000. Its hard work, the first couple of weeks are rough because your getting into shape and ur probably running and lifting more than during the actul season

It is quite hard at first. You will feel a lot of pain at first but once you get used to it, it is not that bad. However, after you get done with practice, you feel so accomplished. That is the best feeling. Stick with it and you will reap the rewards.

At times it can be a lot of work but depending on why you are there it will be worth it in the end......I hated it till i qualified for championships at our first meet then i loved the hard work outs and what not
So its mainly up to why you are there
