It is just simply a very satisfying sensation to enjoy a cigarette if you are a smoker. I don't really know what it is, just that it is. I am sure it is a different experience for just about every smoker. Some are habit smokers, some social, some anxiety.... I 'quit' a few years ago, but still succomb every few months. Only 1 or 2, though. Any more than that and it's back to wheezing and shortness of breath. (Still, too many.) I think the taxes should be even higher. Maybe we wouldn't be so tempted if it were so.

When you first try smoking you get a little buzz and you do it some more. By the time you realize that you're not getting the buzz anymore, you're addicted.

Trying to stop won't kill you, but it's VERY difficult. It's a physical and mental addiction. After you eat you want to smoke or when you get into your car you equate that with lighting up.

Every time I've tried to quit I cannot concentrate on anything but not smoking and wanting to smoke. It's maddening even w/ patches, etc. I know a person that quit over 30 years ago and says that to this day he can sometimes smell cigarettes and want to smoke. That really sucks.

I didn't listen when I was told not to smoke.....I wish I had.

Most of us smokers started when we were in our teens. I was 15 when I started smoking. I kept smoking for the next 3 years when I realized, when adulthood hit, that smoking might not be a very good past time. I've been trying to quit ever since. It does hurt when you quit smoking. Some people have even died from withdrawals. Not smoking for me is like having extreme thirst. My head pounds, my chest starts feeling like a 200 lb animal is sitting on it. I've just recently started trying to quit again. This time I'm using exercise as a diversion and it's going OK. I'm down to 3 a day. I just want to say that I agree that smoking is disgusting, it smells, and it makes you a leper to society. If it was easy to quit, I would have 9 years ago when I realized it was routing my life.

In the 1960's, tobacco companies hired people to stand on street corners in college towns and give away small packs of 6 cigarettes to anyone who would accept them. I took them. They tasted good. I became a smoker. Winston's I think. I admit that cigarettes became my friend. They are there when no one else is. They still taste good. When I try going without them I feel discombobulated, confused, slow thinking, deprived, and empty. Hard to believe, perhaps, for you. Not painful when trying to quit. Just so easy to stop trying to quit and go buy 2 more packs. Camel and Kool now offer one free when you buy one. Net cost per pack $2.50. And on the internet, at native Indian sites, you can buy packs for less than $1 per pack. Some brands are from Nigeria or Pakistan where peasants collect cigarette butts from the streets and the tobacco companies recycle the remaining recyled tobacco into "new" products which cost less than 5 cents per cigarette. They cause a severe cough and have high concentrations of carcinogenic compounds due to the fact that the recycled tobacco has already served as a filter for the inhaled tobacco. I want to quit, and I will before Thanksgiving Day. My promise to God.

I try every year. Make it about 6 weeks to 3 months. For me it is not really enjoying it, because I always am thinking I have to quit. Part of it is true addiction and the other is that at about 6 weeks to there about, I get very depressed and suffer a lot of confusion and anxiety. Im sure it is withdrawl related. So many chemicals in the brain that are gone. It raises endorphine levels and when you cut those off, the brain really freaks out! I will continue to try, because I dont like being a smoker. It has become shamefull in this day and age.

The calmness that it provides when I get stressed, it's better than popping nerve pills, in my opinion...I have quit several times and each time I have went back to my ol' habit...can't say it was painful but I missed the calming effect it brought me. I can't believe in America we're having such a debate and witch hunt on the smokers! 2nd hand smoke(unless you are trapped in a car or a closet)is not going to affect the non-smoker...People say that if your parents smoked you would too...well...I can prove that theory wrong cause neither one of mine smoked! I have two grown children and they have never smoked! Our country is based on democracy and I pay my taxes like everyone and if I want to smoke, I am going too! The gov't needs to tax the rich people who play golf and own several homes, including their boats! We, the American people, need to say NO,NO,and NO to the politicians who keep voting for their add'l pay raises! Don't forget to vote, and let your voices be heard! I need a cig, now!

Before answering I would strongly suggest not to even think about smoking.
If you never eat a delicious fruit nobody can explain the taste to you until u try yourself its same with the smoking ,I used to ask the same question to my dad , but understand now.
quiting is not pain full and if you do not smoke for three months your get rid of addiction but people(i m one of them ) do smoke after even one year and I believe it is more like a habit than addiction

Smoking is very addictive just like any drug....I smoked for over 40 years and have finally quit...I had to do it "cold turkey". I tried everything to quit...Zyban, patches, gum and hypnotism...Nothing worked...Both of my parents were heavy cigarette smokers and both died of lung decease and lung cancer...Even after I lost them, I still couldn't quit...I instead tried to cut back from a carton a week to a pack a week....I finally quit when "Peter Jennings" died a year ago last April...I still have cravings, but they are starting to get farther and few between....If you haven't smoked, don't start. If you have, quit now before you can't.....I just hope it is not too late for me and that my lungs will heal themselves....
