Because a commando is always ready for action, my soldier used to always ready for action, with his little combat helmet on, hence going commando for 16 years, but alas, now I'm married and the day I said "I do" was the day the wife forced him to cover up. I guess he doesn't need to be ready for action when he always tramps through the same jungle. By the way, the term commando was around long before "friends" commando was called commando in the early eighties, friends didn't come out until the 90's

Good question, seems everyone heard it on friends, if President Bush is Commander in Chief of the Armed forces....do you think he goes commando???

As stated in a few previous answers, the phrase was coined by Joey in 'Friends'. In an episode where he and Chandler fall out, he goes and puts on every single item of clothing Chandler owns and exclaims how hot and sweaty he is. Whilst doing lunges he also informs Chandler that he is "going commando".

Because commandos don't wear underwear, it makes too much noise, and its impractical for when one needs to quickly whoop out ones tool to scare off the enemy!
