You definately need to have to do some troubleshooting with the phone to see if its a charger issue, a battery issue, or a phone issue. You can do this by either calling sprint customer care or going to the store.
If it's new, i'm not sure how sprint works but it will probably be under warranty and they might be able to do an exchange for you on the phone/battery/or charger.

It sounds like your charger didn't charge you phone. Plug it in again and make sure the charging light is on. Maybe your battery is dead. You can take it to the Sprint Store or Radio Shack to have them run a diagnostic test on it.

It probably didn't charge cuz the battery is wasted or somethin. don't try and force anything though cuz i have had problems like that before with my phones. if it won't work just shut it off for a while or take it to the store and have them look at it.

it sounds like your battery either failed or the phone malfunctioned. either way, it's a trip to the sprint store.

check the connector. sometimes the connector is bent on either the charger or the phone and it doesn't charge properly.
