It depends on what kind of liar he is.
A deliberate liar knows he is lying. A pathological liar may not.

I have a sister who lies so much she wouldnt be able to tell you a straight answer if her life depended on it. She not only believes her own lies but convinces many people of the same. Needless to say I dont have anything to do with her as I cannot abide liars. Small white lies to save hurting someone is okay, but she will just change her lies to suit the situation so is a person you can never win with as she has a lie for every occasion.

Yes, my brother-n-law did it and probably still does. He lied so much that when he was caught in a lie, he would then try to argue his point because he is so caught up that he believes his own lies. It is a sad way to be but there are many people out here that do.

yes, my stepmother did that when I was growing up. When I was an adult I found I had been misinformed about many things. I was once embarassed in high school during a discussion on space shuttle mission. ...my mother had taught me that whenever the astronauts were in outer space, that the time was different. If they were up there for 3 days, on earth we would have aged 3 weeks, so they would come back 2 1/2 weeks younger. She told so many lies and still does and she really thinks they are true.

Yeah, I have a friend and she lies so much. Like you said even about stupid things that mean nothing. For her it is a matter of being the center of attention and is more exciting than her real life.

Yes. They build up this fantasy where the lie spirals out of control. To keep up the allusion, the person perceives their lie as their new reality. Seek professional help. The person isn't happy and is wasting a lot of time fabricating these lies.

yes . some people lie so much that their lies become their truth. my x wife was and is lie that. usually a person who is like that has had something happen in their child hood that affects them all their life. it is impossible to have an honest relationship with them. they will take parts of one situation and add it to part of another to make something that sounds reasonable to them. when something happens its always the other persons fault or a misunderstanding. when they are confronted with what really hap pend they call you a liar and try to degrade and demoralize you in front of others. in my case the Dr's figured that my wife had mental problems in child hood and it was still affecting her in her adult life. i hope this gives you some insight.

Compulsive lieing is a form of denial brought on in most cases by early rejection, lack of support, discipline or other forms of negitive surroundings. It is how our mind protects us in an effort to gain acceptance. We know it's not true when we say it but then a compulsive lier slips into denial for fear of rejection and processes it as true to them. He should definitley seek professional help and get rid of those insecurities. (I'm guessing the root of the lieing is in the upbringing.)

Yes, that is possible...some people are compulsive liars...they lose sight of what the truth really is...
If he lies that much, see if he'll get some counseling...that's a deal breaker in my book...how can we be happy with someone we cannot believe...there can be no trust in such a situation...

Oh yes!! They believe themselves. Sad, huh? What's worse is when they pull you in on it in a conversation and you either have to go along with them or call them out. That's when my hearing would get bad. If you have kids I hope you can separate their respect for the Dad from his bad habit and encourage them to not follow in his foot(mouth)steps.
