Edit: Apparently, few other people are aware that sometimes adults are adopted by other families. My neighbor across the street was adopted by an old man. In exchange for taking care of him in his feeble years, and being there in case of medical problems, the neighbor was adopted to ease the legal technicalities of local inheritance law.

By keeping this facts from them, you are only making the matter worse. If you let time passes by and they find out you are adopted from a third party they will resent you forever.
After you tell them you should consider finding help.There are therapists who are specialists in helping parents in this position.

At a Thanksgiving/Christmas feast with all your friends and family there...don't make a big scene about it.
